Howard Harley Lock, Jr., went to see the Lord on Nov. 3, 2009 after a courageous battle against cancer for almost three years. He was born Aug. 6, 1940, to Howard Harley Lock Sr. and Jeanette Miller Lock, longtime residents of Lockhart and members of the First Lockhart Baptist Church.

Howard attended the Lockhart Public Schools where he participated in all sports. He was also an inaugural member of Little League Baseball in Lockhart. He graduated from Lockhart High School in 1958. He then attended Texas A&M University where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He graduated with a major in Civil Engineering in 1962.

After graduation he served two years in the United States Army and was stationed in South Korea on the 38th Parallel. His first civilian job was with Brown and Root in Houston. Later, he worked as an independent contractor in a variety of construction projects in the oil and gas industry in Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Georgia, Aruba, San Lucias, Afghanistan, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Howard was also actively breeding and raising Brangus cattle all his adult life.

His happiest and proudest moment, however, was marrying his wife, the former Pat Wissen, and becoming a dad to Brian, Brent and Brandon Cunningham.

Howard was a lifelong member of the First Lockhart Baptist Church and the Adultís Sunday School class which were always an important part of his life.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Gene Lock, formerly of Lockhart, and by his grandparents Carrie and Gold Lock, formerly of Bastrop, Texas.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 24 years, Pat; his mother- and father-in-law, Lula and Gene Wissen, of Austin; his sons, Brian Cunningham, wife, Jill, and children Ana, Elijah and Kyla, of Kauai, Hawaii; Brent Cunningham, of Lockhart, and Brandon Cunningham, wife, Kendra, and children, Cass and Clayton, of Lockhart; aunt, Elva Clyde Roberson, of Austin; brother John Lock and wife, Sandie, of Lockhart; brother-in-law, Sherwin Wissen and wife, Betty, of Austin; sister, Billie Jean Coopwood and husband, Jim Hamilton, of New York; nieces and nephews: Sarah Cowdin and husband Shawn of Ft. Worth; Sam and Connie Lock, and Jeb and Sarah Lock, Dr. Joe and JoAnn Coopwood, of San Antonio, Dr. Ben and Robin Coopwood, of Austin, Colin and Kim Wissen and Kevin and Kim Wissen, of Austin, and all of the children of these families.

Mrs. Angelita Sanchez Islas, age 69, was called home by the Lord on Friday, December 5, 2008.

She is preceeded in death by her parents Elvida and Joe G. Sanchez and two sisters, Viriginia Sanchez Leija and Yolanda Sanchez Hernandez. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Joe Islas; her sons, Joe L. Islas and wife Bonnie, Tony Islas and his wife Carolina; her daughter, Lizabeth Islas Martinez and husband Tomas; her two granddaughtes, Lesley Islas and Erica Islas; her five remaining sisters, Maria Mayo, Elvida Trevino, Esperanza Balandran, Emma Robinson, and Mercedes Sanchez; her four brothers, Joe Sanchez, Marcos Sanchez, Alfredo Sanchez and Rudolpho Sanchez; many other family members and special friends.

Recitation of the rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Monday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, also at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

John Kenneth Overman, 67, passed away on Oct. 27, 2007.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1939, to Ray and Maggie Overman.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lavern Woodworth.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Wanda; step-daughters, Lori and husband, Jeff; grandchildren, Keith, Kyle, Jennifer, Steven and David; Brother Wayne Overman and wife, Carol; sisters Alta Rae Dinges and Shirley Schnautz; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. He will be greatly missed by all.

Services were held on Oct. 30, 2007, at Klein Funeral Home in Spring, Texas. Burial followed at Guedry Cemetery in Batson, Texas.

August 1, 2004 Ranger, Texas

RANGER -- Lanny Sledge, 64, of Ranger, passed away on Sunday August 1, 2004. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday August 7, 2004 at First Baptist Church with Robert Winter and Rev. Jerry Speer officiating. Burial will follow in Bullock cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home of Ranger. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Sledge was born on December 1, 1939 in Apache Oklahoma to Gerald and Bonnie (Trotter) Sledge. He attended school in Ranger and graduated from Lockhart. He married Jeralyn Anderson on August 5, 1967 in Ranger. Lanny served his country in the United Stated Navy Submarine Service, retiring after 22 years. He then worked in Oklahoma and Odessa as Safety Engineer for Sharp Drilling. Most recently he was a construction and painting contractor locally. He attended First Baptist Church.

Lanny is survived by his wife, Jeralyn of Ranger; son and daughter- in-law, Chad and Jill Sledge of Rowlett; sisters, Geraldine Leanna Lindsey of Eastland and Sharon Janette Barr of Alice; grandchildren, Emily, Macie, Laney Sledge of Rowlett; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Kenneth Wayne Sledge and David Loren Sledge.

Lanny's journey through this life has ended but we know because of his faith and trust in God his journey has just begun.

Peggy J. Griffith, 63, of Lockhart, passed away, Monday, March 8, 2004 in San Marcos. Born on September 2, 1940 to Ben and Pauline (Stringer) Hilburn in Stephenville, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Pauline Hilburn on January 4, 2001 and husband, Rodney S. Griffith on August 21, 2003.

She is survived by her father, Ben Hilburn of Lockhart; sons, R. Todd Griffith of Manchacha and Curtis R. Griffith of Lockhart; daughter, Christina D. Griffith of Clear Lake; brother, Benny M. Hilburn and wife Linda of Lockhart; sisters, Jon Ann Thompson and husband Al of Atlanta, Ga, and Jennifer Lyn Francis and husband Neal of Seymour, Texas.

She was a graduate from Lockhart High School in 1958 and earned her Bachelors degree in Education at South West Texas University, then her Masters degree from McKendree College in Belleville, IL.

Peggy was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the choir. A member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. A supporter of the Special Olympics and the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. She was a sponsor of the National Honor Society, and Chair Person of the History Department at Lockhart High School.

Visitation will be at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, March 10th at McCurdy Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 11th at the First United Methodist Church, Lockhart. Interment to follow at 1:45 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio with Rev. Robert F. Hahn officiating. Pallbearers will be Gerald Anglin, Bryant Hohertz, Charles Red, Fred Buckner, Charles Kimbrough and Kenneth Hoffman.

Armando (Mando) Solis Castillo

June 2003 Tuscon, Arizona

Armando (Mando) Solis Castillo, a former resident of Lockhart; was laid to rest on June 16, 2003 in Tucson, Arizona. Armando was a graduate of Lockhart High School in 1958. He later served his country in the United States Airforce for 4 years.

His wife, Cruz Castillo; daughters, Leticia and Celina; Sons, Armando Jr. Mario, Adrian and all his grandchildren survive Armando, all of Tucson. Sister, Jovita Castillo; brothers, Gilbert Castillo, Cristobal Castillo of Lockhart, Joe Castillo of San Marcos, Arthur Castillo of Georgia, Amando Casstillo of Kempner, and several nieces and nephews.

Armando will always be remembered for his rich sense of humor and his caring nature of his family and friends

You will be missed.

Malcolm left LHS after his sophomore year. He was on the Cross Country team at Texas A&M, graduating in 1962 with a degree in physical education. In 1994, he was living in Bryan, Texas, married with two sons and a daughter. No other information.

Gene Arland Roberts, 54, of Cedar Park, died Sunday, July 3, 1994. He was born in Lockhart on Oct. 10, 1939, the son of Walter and Pauline Graham Roberts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Terry Gene Roberts and Walter Lee Roberts and one bother.

Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Roberts of Cedar Park; sons, Gene Arland Roberts Jr. of Anderson Mill, and Clint Allen Roberts of Cedar Park; daughters, Teresa Pauline Voigt of Jonah, Texas and Synthia Gail Baker of Leander; brother, Walter Marie Roberts Jr. of Kermit and five grandchildren.

Services were held at McCurdy Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, July 6 with the Rev. George Goodman officiating. Burial followed at Lockhart City Cemetery.

J. D. Chapman, 47, of Lockhart, died Thursday, March 12, 1987. He was born in Lockhart on Nov. 4, 1939, the son of James Dietrick and Ollie Alexander Chapman. Survivors include wife, Shirley Chapman of Lockhart; sons and daughter-in-law, Neil Chapman of Lockhart, Chris and Kimberly Chapman of Lockhart; sisters, Betty Chapman Treude of El Campo, Threasol [T.] Traw of Asheville, N. C.; granddaughter, Kayla Kristine Chapman.

Funeral services were held at McCurdy Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 14, with the Rev. Dr. William Treude officiating. Burial followed at Lockhart City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wayne Reed, Don Alexander, Gary Koehler, Arlin Faifer, Carl Chance and Keith Koehler. Honorary pallbearers were Walter Athey, Frank Harbour, Tom Connolly,M.D., L. G. Grimes, Burnett Koehler, Bill Koehler, and Bill Alexander. Arrangements by McCurdy.
